Posted on Tuesday, May 14, 2019

At ARCS 2019 All Members Conference (AMC), experience the best Portland has to offer by exploring the city’s most exciting features and attractions in science and technology, nature, and arts and culture with seven scheduled tours and two optional weekend events.

Science and Technology | Three Tours

Advancing science and technology has been very core of ARCS Foundation’s mission. Tour 1: Experience firsthand our support at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute as ARCS Scholar Alums provide a guided tour of the cutting edge cancer research facility. Tour 2: Explore the science behind developing new food products at the Oregon State Food Innovation Center (FIC), from research and testing to marketing and business planning. Tour 3: View Saving Atlantis, a documentary film produced by Oregon State University that delves into the epidemic of coral reef destruction.

Nature | Two Tours

Portland is known for its awe-inspiring nature. Tour 1: At the Portland Japanese Garden, take a glimpse into Japanese culture and view koi ponds, ornate stone features, and lush greenery with scenic views of Mt. Hood. Tour 2: Modeled after the breathtaking gardens of the Ming Dynasty, the Lan Su Chinese Garden reflects the Chinese tradition of combining art, architecture, design and nature. Each of these gardens provides a unique opportunity to experience the serenity of eastern culture and understand the importance nature plays in everyday life.

Arts and Culture | Two Tours

Oregon’s state history is steeped with culture that has been well preserved. Tour 1: The Oregon Historical Society (OHS) museum takes you on a journey through the state’s settlement. Did you know OHS continues to publish the Oregon Historical Quarterly, a journal originally published in 1900? Tour 2: As the seventh oldest museum in the United States, the Portland Art Museum offers a wide variety of modern and ancient art, specifically, renowned Native American art pieces. Both museums were founded in the 1890’s and serve as a look into Oregon’s rich past.

Tour 2: If you’re looking for something more adventurous, take to the seas of the scenic Oregon coast for an all day excursion of whale searching with whale expert, Bruce Mate.
