Dr. Wade Marcum (2008-10 Portland Scholar; Assistant Professor, Oregon State University) has received a 3-year, $4 million awardfrom the U.S. Department of Energy for a project to restart the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT). Wade will lead the multidisciplinary project team of researchers from academia, industry, and government. TREAT, located at the Idaho National Laboratory, has been shut down since 1994. Wade says that one goal of the project is to develop “world-class experimental data which will be used to support evolutionary developments and advancements in safer, more efficient nuclear fuel options.”
In regard to ARCS, as noted in the Portland Chapter’s 2014-15 Annual Report, Wade says: “I used my annual ARCS scholar money to support travel to conferences where I was able to network and engage professionals from industry and academia. By the time I stepped into my faculty appointment, I had created a close group of colleagues who have significantly helped accelerate my career.” Wade adds, “Without the ARCS funding, I would not have been able to participate in many of these opportunities.”
