ARCS Forward - Prostate Cancer: Three Perspectives

Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at 5:00 PM ET/4:00 PM CT/3:00 PM MT/2:00 PM PT/11:00 AM HT

ARCS Forward events are personal and intimate conversations between members, current scholars, and other outstanding scientists in all STEM fields. These events are held virtually over Zoom. This month's speakers are ARCS Scholars Hersh Bhargava (Northern California), Amy Leatherwood (Oregon), and Kendra Marr (Phoenix). This event will be moderated by Jill Bray.

Hersh Bhargava is a second-year PhD student at University of California San Francisco. Hersh is focused on developing methods for reprogramming human immune cells to fight cancer. He leverages computational and experimental methods to design and build T cells with novel capabilities that enhance their antitumor capabilities. Before he started his PhD, he developed machine learning and computer vision algorithms to predict disease aggressiveness in prostate cancer.

Amy Leatherwood is a PhD student and nurse practitioner at Oregon Health & Science University. Amy has eighteen years of experience as a nurse practitioner, most recently in cancer survivorship, which is the focus of her research. She is currently investigating the cognitive decline in men receiving hormonal treatment for prostate cancer and its effect on continuing employment after treatment.

Kendra Marr is a sixth-year, dual-degree MD/PhD student in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Kendra is pursuing a PhD in Cancer Biology, concentrating on how early-stage prostate tumors become aggressive and move to other organs. A physician-scientist in training, her long-term goal is to lead an independent cancer research lab in an academic hospital and translate basic science into her oncology practice.
