Dr. Kent Thornburg to Keynote Oregon Chapter's 2012 Scholar Awards Luncheon

Posted on Monday, August 27, 2012

We all eat every day, more than once. That’s why you don’t want to miss the ARCS 2012 Scholar Awards Luncheon on Monday, November 5 at the Portland Art Museum.  The topic will be “Nutrition Therapy: the Next Generation Medicine,” and the keynote speaker will be Kent Thornburg, PhD, Director of the Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness.

The Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is brand new, made possible by a $25 million commitment by Bob and Charlee Moore, founders of Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods. The Institute’s ambitious aim is to stop rampant health problems caused by unhealthy eating and inadequate nutrition through research and community outreach.  The Institute’s mission is based on the belief that reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases throughout life starts by promoting healthy, nutrient-rich diets based on wholesome foods — before conception, during pregnancy and lactation, and in infancy and early childhood.

The Institute is housed within the OHSU School of Medicine.  “Food is such a basic part of life that it’s the ideal place to start making big changes in public health,” said Mark Richardson, dean of the OHSU School of Medicine.  Donor Bob Moore agrees: “I can’t think of a tougher challenge than changing people’s behavior when it comes to their diets.”

Members of the public and all ARCS Oregon members are encouraged to attend the luncheon.  All the current ARCS-funded scholars from Oregon State University and OHSU will be introduced. ARCS Scholar and PhD Candidate, Colby Mangini, will present: "Russian Roulette and Radioactive Dust A Shortcut to Calculating High-Energy Electron Skin Damage."
