Tell Me About ARCS

ARCS Mission

The ARCS Foundation provides scholarships to academically outstanding United States citizens studying to complete their degrees in science, medicine and engineering, thereby contributing to the worldwide advancement of science and technology.

The National Organization of the ARCS Foundation:
Celebrating 50 Years

  • The ARCS Foundation is a group of over 1,500 visionary women who raise funds for extremely talented graduate and undergraduate students in science, medicine and engineering.
  • The ARCS Foundation was incorporated in 1958 and since that time has awarded over $66 million.
  • There are 14 ARCS chapters nationwide, supporting 44 universities.
  • ARCS Fellows are all US citizens with outstanding scholastic records and proven abilities, receiving multiple offers to study at the best universities in the country.  This is a very competitive and coveted award and will often make the difference for students when they are deciding which university to attend.

The Seattle Chapter of the ARCS Foundation:
Celebrating 30 Years

  • We support the University of Washington and Washington State University.
  • The total amount of Fellowships awarded by our chapter has exceeded $10.8 million.
  • Our chapter is among the largest annual donors to UW.  This year UW is honoring us as a Presidential Laureate as our cumulative donations have reached $10 million.
  • For the 2008-09 academic year, we awarded $700,000 in Fellowships--a 700-fold increase over our first year of giving. We supported a total of 108 Fellows, each of whom receives support for a three-year period.
  • The Seattle Chapter has 77 Active members, 44 Associate members, and 3 Ambassador members.
  • This year we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary. Our first Fellowship awards of $500 each were made to two Fellows at the UW. Our first awards to scholars at WSU were made in 1999-2000.
  • The Seattle Chapter of ARCS was named the “Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of 2006” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Washington Chapter.

What are Seattle ARCS Foundation Fellowships?

Fellowships are a grant of $17,500 over three year that the Seattle Chapter funds for graduate students at the UW and WSU.  The UW and WSU use these grants to attract graduate students with outstanding scholastic records who receive multiple offers to study at the best universities in the country.

100% of all money raised for named ARCS Foundation fellowships is passed through directly to the student.  No money is taken out for overhead either by the ARCS Foundation or the universities the ARCS Foundation supports.
