Tell Me About ARCS

ARCS Mission

The ARCS Foundation provides scholarships to academically outstanding United States citizens studying to complete their degrees in science, medicine and engineering, thereby contributing to the worldwide advancement of science and technology.

The National Organization of ARCS

  • ARCS members are  women who raise funds for graduate student fellowships in the natural sciences, medicine and engineering.
  • ARCS was incorporated in 1958 and since that time has awarded over $61 million to support study in the fields of science and technology.
  • There are 14 ARCS chapters nationwide, supporting 43 universities.
  • ARCS Fellows are all US citizens with outstanding scholastic records and proven abilities, receiving multiple offers to study at the best universities in the country.  This is a very competitive and coveted award and will often make the difference for students when they are deciding which university to attend.

The Seattle Chapter of ARCS:

  • The Seattle Chapter has 72 active members, 44 associate members, and 3 Ambassador members.
  • The Seattle Chapter was founded just over 29 years ago, in 1978.
  • Over the last 29 years, ARCS has contributed over $8.9 million to the UW in support of graduate fellows.  The Seattle Chapter of the ARCS Foundation is recognized as a UW Laureate, and is one of the University’s most generous annual donors. The Seattle Chapter of ARCS most recently was named the “Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation of 2006” by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Washington Chapter and was honored at their National Philanthropy Day luncheon on November 16th, 2006.
  • In 2006-2007, The Seattle chapter of the ARCS provided $829,000 in support to the UW and WSU.  We supported a total of 143 Fellows, each of whom receives support for a three-year period.

What are Seattle ARCS Foundation Fellowships?

Fellowships are used as recruiting tools for university departments, colleges and schools, at the UW and WSU.  We support departments in the colleges of Arts & Science, Engineering, Medicine, Forest Resources, Ocean & Fishery Sciences, The Graduate School, Pharmacy and Public Health and Community Medicine.

Beginning in the 2006-2007 academic year, all ARCS Fellowships became awards of $17,500 payable over three years. In the first year of the award, the fellow receives the $2,500 recruitment bonus. This allows our fellows to mitigate the cost of relocating and beginning a new career as a graduate student. The second and third years of the fellowship are paid at $5,000 per year.

Individuals donating funds to support a Named Fellowship have paid the full amount of the Fellowships.  “ARCS Seattle Chapter Fellowships” are from funds raised through the ARCS Foundation Annual Luncheon, Annual Auction and other fundraising activities.

For an ARCS Foundation Fellow, the Fellowship money is unrestricted.

ARCS Foundation chapters raise money for fellowships, but do not administer the selection process of the fellows.  Selection is made in conjunction with The Graduate School and department heads in eligible departments at the respective universities.

ARCS Foundation Fellows are all U.S. citizens with outstanding scholastic records and proven abilities, receiving multiple offers to study at the best universities in the country.  This is a very competitive and coveted award and will often make the difference for students when they are deciding which university to attend.

100% of all money raised for named ARCS Foundation fellowships is passed through directly to the student.  No money is taken out for overhead either by the ARCS Foundation or the universities the ARCS Foundation supports.
