The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation is a national all-volunteer women’s organization dedicated to enhancing America’s national and local capacity for research and innovation in science and technology by:
• Providing financial support to outstanding American doctoral
candidates in the sciences
• Increasing the number of outstanding American scholars pursuing
advanced scientific study and research in the Pittsburgh region
The ARCS Foundation provides a unique, cost-effective, and quality-assured mechanism through which corporate, civic and philanthropic organizations, as well as individuals, can impact American scientific and technological capacity, a primary engine of national economic growth and a cornerstone of our quality of life. Since its founding in 1958, the ARCS Foundation nationally has contributed over $66,000,000 in support of American scholars at 43 of the country’s leading universities.
The Pittsburgh Chapter, chartered in 2003, is one of the newest of 14 chapters. In a very short time, the Chapter has already made a sizeable financial commitment to its first partner school, Carnegie Mellon University. In June 2007, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine was approved as a recipient institution.
An ARCS Foundation Award is a coveted prize which often makes the difference to students when they are deciding which university to attend and in the completion of their degrees. A Pittsburgh Chapter Scholar receives $5,000 of support per year for three years, or until the completion of the doctoral degree, whichever is sooner. To date, the Pittsburgh Chapter has committed $425,000 to support 29 scholars. All money raised for ARCS Foundation Awards is passed through directly to the students.
