Mission: The ARCS Foundation is dedicated to helping meet our country’s need for scientists and engineers by providing scholarships to academically outstanding students who are U.S. citizens studying for degrees in science, medicine and engineering, thereby contributing not only to the advancement of science, but also to the material and intellectual welfare of all people.
The National Organization of ARCS:
• ARCS members are women who raise funds for scholarships to elite scholars at prestigious universities in natural sciences, medicine, and engineering.
• ARCS Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in 1958 and since that time has given over $53 million nationwide in scholarships/fellowships to support the fields of science and technology.
• ARCS Foundation, Inc. is represented by 14 chapters nationwide, supporting 43 universities.
• ARCS scholars are all U. S. citizens with outstanding scholastic records and proven abilities. The ARCS awards are competitive and coveted awards. The scholarships are unrestricted funds.
The Lubbock Chapter of ARCS:
• The Lubbock Chapter of ARCS was chartered in 1972 by Mrs. C.B. (Fran) Carter.
• Since the chapter’s founding in 1972, the chapter has funded $1.2 million in scholarships to scholars at Texas Tech University, TTU Health Sciences Center, and Lubbock Christian University.
• ARCS Foundation, Inc. has one very clear purpose: To provide sizeable scholarships to academically outstanding students in the natural sciences, medicine, and engineering.
Scholars: Scholars must be a full-time graduate or upper-division undergraduate of exceptional academic promise. The scholars must also be U. S. citizens of proven high achievement who need financial assistance to complete their higher education. Scholars are selected without regard to race, gender or creed. Once selected, the scholar is eligible for 3 years of support. Scholars must reapply every year and continue to meet the criteria of ARCS.
Need for Scientists: Current predictions indicate that the U. S. is quickly falling behind other nations in our production of scholars in the scientific and technological fields. The U. S. has seen a decline in the number of degrees awarded in science and engineering in the past 20 years, while European and Asian countries have maintained or increased the number of such degrees. These predictions take on a special sense of urgency in ARCS in order to facilitate the graduation rate of as many elite scholars as possible.
